Janice Carter

November 3, 1945 — April 23, 2023

Chapel Hill

Janice L Carter, 77, born in 1945 in Des Moines, Iowa passed away Sunday, April 23rd, 2023.

Survived by daughter Melissa McTavish (Mike) of Chapel Hill, TN , two grandchildren, Bryan and Alexandria McTavish (Cory Massey) and a great grandchild, Clementine of Murfreesboro, TN. Sister, Nancy Overbey of Nashville, TN and brothers Lance Andrews of Athens, GA, Randall and Brad Andrews of Franklin, TN. Proceeded in death by her Mother, Bonita Andrews of Nashville, TN (Franklin, TN)  and her father Raymond Andrews of Nashville, TN, and her sister Cheryl LeClair of Murfreesboro.

Janice spent her childhood in Des Moines, Iowa and Iowa City, Iowa where she was treated for orthopedic issues she had experienced since birth. It was during this time that her mother would become engaged to her future adoptive father and this changed the course of her family history. Janice graduated from North High School in Des Moines.

Janice was a photography enthusiast and that led to her many years working with the Younker’s Department Store in their Camera Department in downtown Des Moines, IA. Janice would later become a member of the Iowa Army National guard where she served for 12 years.  She later joined all of her immediate family in moving to Nashville to join her long-time Nashville resident sister along with her retired mother and father and five siblings.

Janice was very much family oriented and deeply focused on the well-being of her daughter, grandchildren, Mother and Father and her siblings. Janice had a passion for shopping and would often appear bearing gifts that she had found that she knew was just perfect for each individual. Janice was a truly selfless person, often showing thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity to all.

Janice had a deep affinity for those who served. Whether leaving a larger tip to a server than usual, buying a meal for a service member or simply a kind gesture toward a Fire Fighter, EMT, Police Officer, or Nurse.

Janice retired from the State of Tennessee where she worked with the Department of Employment. This allowed her to spend time traveling in later years taking several cruises and many short regional trips with family.

At Janice’s request there will be no formal funeral services at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to your local animal shelter or simply follow Janice’s lead with a better than usual tip or a kind gesture toward a veteran or first responder.

Nashville Cremation Center is honored to be entrusted with handling Ms. Carter's arrangements. Please visit her tribute page to leave a thoughtful note for the family.
