Nashville

Martin J. Burns of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his home on January 18, 2026, at the age of 97. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Frances “Jane”, his son Stephen, his grandson Matthew, his sister Mary Katherine “Sissy”, and brothers Billy, Jimmy and Johnny, and brothers-in-law John and Frank Rhodes.

Martin was married to his college sweetheart, Jane, for 62 years until her passing in 2014. Together, they raised six children: Martin Rhodes (Georgeana), Timothy, Stephen, Mary Julia (Joel), Frank, and Jane (Todd). Their family grew to include eight grandchildren—Michael (Eleanna), Ashley, Christopher (Kelli), Zach (Sarah), Matthew, Emma (Nicky), Kyle, and Peter—and eight great-grandchildren—Bryceson, Lockelyn, Ailís, Ruthie, Stephen, Alice, Jane, and Benjamin.

Born in Nashville in 1928, Martin was the eldest of five children of Martin J. Burns Sr. and Catherine Kelley Burns. He attended the Cathedral of Incarnation for his early education and graduated from Father Ryan in 1946. Shortly after graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served in World War II, stationed in Germany following the declaration of peace. Upon returning home, Martin enrolled at Peabody College, where he met Jane Rhodes. Their relationship was deeply rooted in their Catholic faith, and they remained devoted to serving their church throughout their lives.

Martin spent his career as a salesman, known for his quick wit and unwavering dedication to his family. His engaging personality and pride in his Nashville roots were evident throughout his life. He was an active member of the community, most notably making spaghetti dinners for St. Bernard carnivals for over a decade. Martin also served as the founding chairman of the board for the Middle Tennessee Mental Health Coop.

During Jane’s battle with Alzheimer’s, Martin was a devoted caregiver, exemplifying his deep love and commitment. His pride and devotion to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were celebrated over 60 years of Sunday dinners and holiday gatherings, always featuring large family meals and lively conversation. Martin’s welcoming spirit meant friends were always invited to join, making their home a center of warmth and joy.
