Martha Ann Sitter (née Lipscomb) June 24, 1935 – October 16, 2025
Martha Ann Sitter, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, in Brentwood, Tennessee, at the age of 90.
Born in Water Valley, Mississippi, Martha was the youngest of five siblings. She began her career as a telephone operator, but her greatest calling was motherhood. After the birth of her first child, she devoted herself fully to her family—creating a home filled with warmth, kindness, and love.
Raised Southern Baptist, Martha held her faith with quiet conviction. Though she never imposed her beliefs on others, she loved God deeply and maintained a lifelong devotion to prayer—teaching her children to pray each night, a ritual she herself continued faithfully.
Martha found joy in life’s simple pleasures: watching football with a bowl of popcorn, enjoying a good meal, and spending time with her cherished dogs, Roxie and Sprite. She had a lifelong love of horses—owning one in her youth and riding whenever she could later in life—and her home reflected that passion through her treasured collection of horse figurines. She also had a special fondness for Dobermans, especially her beloved Shadow.
She possessed a quiet but unmistakable sense of humor, using gentle wit to poke fun at arrogance and pretension. Guided by a strong moral compass, she valued honesty above all else, often saying, “I can’t stand a liar.” She naturally stood up for others, especially those being treated unfairly, and always had a soft spot for the underdog.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Sitter, and her siblings Nannette Ware, Jimmy Lipscomb, Allen Lipscomb, and Billy Lipscomb.
She is survived by her sons, James Allen (Theresa) Sitter and William Joseph (Natalie) Sitter; grandchildren, Ali Gataa, Kalid Gataa, Danielle Cooley, and Brian Keener; great-granddaughter, Alana Cooley; and many dear friends and neighbors.
In accordance with her wishes, Martha will be cremated, and no formal service is planned. Her family invites those who knew her to honor her memory in their own way—through a quiet moment of reflection, a kind gesture, or the sharing of a story about her life and love.
Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the family she nurtured. She will be remembered for her quiet strength, her devotion to those she loved, and the gentle grace with which she lived her life.
