George Kahanuala Metz

November 9, 1949 — June 19, 2024

Antioch

George Kahanuala Metz of Antioch,Tennessee, went home to be with Jesus on June 19th, 2024 at the age of 74. He is preceded in death by his parents Mabel Kaui Chong and George Franklin Metz, and by his son George Moanikeala Metz.

George grew up the only son of a career Marine, and as a child lived on or near U.S. Military Bases around the country and around the world - in places such as Okinawa.

He was living in Santa Ana, California during his high school years and he graduated from Santa Ana High School in 1967. Moving five hundred miles north to Chico, California, George received his Social Work degree from California State University, Chico. He was an avid golfer and played with the golf teams in both high school and college. During his college years, specifically the summer of 1969, as a member of the Continental Singers, a California based Christian singing group, George toured and sang at stops across the U.S. and across southern Europe. Vietnam era that it was, in the late 1960s George commited to military service, and following in the tradition of his father, George planned to enter the Marine Corp.

Among some of his unique accomplishments, George won the 1977 Marine Corps Golf Tournament in Okinawa and he was sent back to the states to represent the Marine Base in Okinawa at the next level. George was a Captain in the Marine Corp and served for 10 years.

George invested in people. Some of them were blood family. George has maintained active relationships with Metz relatives in California, in Hawaii, South Dakota, North Carolina, Georgia, and elsewhere -- who as a family priority have made it an intentional practice to keep in touch -- no matter how far the distance. Whatever the latest technology, as a descendant and member of the Metz family, George has looked for and found ways to honor God, honor country and honor and invest in family and friends.

George moved to Tennessee in 1990. He brought with him his sense of serving others. He has consistently served family and friends - even when it really meant making some sacrifices to be there when his help was needed. He spent his life quietly and consistently invested in Church, community, city, county and country -- and spreading Christianity by example.

George is survived by his wife Marilyn Reel Metz of Antioch,Tennessee, his daughter and son-in law Heather and David Ritchie of Lake Charles, Louisiana, his son Ryan Metz of Marietta, Georgia; Grandchildren: Bryce, Caroline and Aidan Ritchie of Lake Charles, Louisiana; his step-son Benjamin Reel of Knoxville, Tennessee; step-son Matthew Reel of Washington, D.C. and Primm Springs,Tennessee; step-daughter Jennifer Bailey (Kansas City, MO.), step-son Michael Bailey ( now residing in Denmark), step-daughter Rachel Newberry (Pasadena, MD), step-grandsons Christopher Clouse and Miles Saxton of Pasadena, MD); sisters-in-law and husbands: Blythe and Larry Ashworth of Nashville,TN; LuEllen and Karl Klimmek of Sikeston, MO; Brook and David Martin of Nashville, TN and many nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.
