Alice M. Hayes

Alice Murtha Hayes was born in St. Albans, NY on October 8th, 1928 to Robert L. Murtha and Alice Hotchkiss. She died December 1, 2019 (age 91) in Nashville, TN, where she was a resident at Nashville Center for Rehabilitation and Healing.

She was raised in St. Albans and Hollis, Queens, NY and graduated from Andrew Jackson H.S. She married Richard P. Hayes on October 22,1949. They were together for 68 years before he died in October, 2017.

Being an only child, she always wanted a large family. Alice raised 6 children and loved being a mother and grandmother. She is survived by her children, Eileen Michel, Janet Brohm, Richard Hayes, Patricia (Trish) Brownell, Robert Hayes and William (Bill) Hayes, as well as her grandchildren Jim Stumbaugh, Brian Stumbaugh (Amanda), Tim Stumbaugh (Anna), Julie S. Golsong (Guillaume), Jessica Stumbaugh, Dylan Brownell, Anna Brownell, Dustin Brohm (Jordan), Travis Brohm, Connor Hayes, Michael Hayes, John Hayes, Geneva Bazalgette (John Paul), and Reagan Hayes. She was also a great-grandmother to Katie Stumbaugh, Bailee Brohm, Burton Brohm, Mason Stumbaugh, Isabel Stumbaugh, Jackson Brohm, Kaia Brohm, Asher Bazalgette, Emmerson Bazalgette and Sloane Bazalgette.

Alice valued education and especially encouraged her children and grandchildren to become life-long readers. She sold World Book encyclopedias and became known as the “Look it Up” lady as she went into schools to promote literacy.

Always an optimist, Alice embraced each of the many moves her family would make with each business transfer. Continuing the wanderlust over the years brought her and Richard from New York to Ohio, Illinois, Tennessee, California, Mexico and back to Nashville, where they retired.

A private memorial service will be held In Hermitage,TN on Saturday, January 25, 2020. Burial by her husband’s side will be in the Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Pegram, TN.

The family would like to thank the staff at Nashville Center for Rehabilitation and Healing and Alive Hospice for their loving care of our mother and grandmother.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or any charity of choice.
